DO NOT JUDGE, BUT STRENGTHEN (2)

A call for tolerance, mutual respect and edification This is the second edition of this series. In the first article, we gave the introduction of this teaching. We found out from Romans 14 that God desire not for us to be judgemental. We saw the context of the letter as written by the Apostle Paul. We identified two things Paul expounded on, warning the church to avoid being judgemental on: the Sabbath day and meal. Today, we shall discuss the first.  The Day of Worship  a. "One man thinks that a certain day is more important than the other, while another man thinks that all day is the same. Each one should be fully persuaded in his mind. (v.5) He who thinks highly of a certain day does it in honour of the Lord; he that regard not the day, does so too in honour of the Lord. (Romans 14:5-6) b. "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day or of the new moon, or of the a Sabbath day." (Colossians 2:16) The Sacredness of the Sabbath...

DO NOT JUDGE, BUT STRENGTHEN (4)

A call for tolerance, mutual respect and edification We have come a long way in this 4-series teaching on judging others. With our principal text taken from Romans 14, we have shared insights on the issue of criticising and judging other people's lives. This is with respect to doctrinal variations with the Christian faith, and by extension, our recommended treatment of others outside the faith. In the last three editions, we have identified and discussed a number of issues as the Apostle Paul addressed to the church. This include judgement on choice of meal and Sabbath (the day of worship). In today's edition, (which is the last for the series), we shall summarize on the recommendations made by Paul in this letter. Enjoy the read.  The Letter: Romans 14  a. "Accept among you the man/woman who is weak in faith, but do not argue with him about his personal opinion. (v.1) One man thinks that all days are the same. Each one should be fully persuaded in his mind. (v.5) The man ...

Injured Conscience II

Is there a high tendency for a DEVOUT Christian to be judgemental and intolerant towards others on religious issues? Hmmm... I think Yes. I used to be like that. 🖐️ I have confessed. 😀 Goodlife, you no do wel sha.. but e don pass. 🧑‍🦲 I don't intend to say that I was devout. 🙄 The Holy Ghost enrolled me on a unlearning course and uprooted that tendency during my service year, when I studied Romans 14 for my 4 episode article DO NOT JUDGE...  In the first edition (of 'Injured Conscience'), I introduced Apostle Paul's letter to the Romans: where he warned against doctrinal extremism, especially when dealing with new converts. In the same letter, he encouraged exemplary living, to help consciences of others. In as much as it is good to uphold the doctrines of righteousness and sanctification, we should also balance our approach with the love of God.  'Let us not put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall on his brother's way.' Rom 14:13 Paul used the exa...

Injured Conscience

In 2019, I wrote on Paul's counsel to the Roman churches concerning their dealings with one another, especially the new converts. The early church was blessed with multitude of converts. Their spirits had been saved, but their minds had to gradually undergo RENEWAL, and that would be achieved through teachings and love. Teaching, because as these converts fellowship with the believers, they learn the ways of God, and the doctrines of their new faith. It would take a gradual process for them to DECONSTRUCT the old doctrines in their hearts and ADAPT to the new things they were learning. Since they were religious and conscientious people, intolerance was easily found in their dealings with the converts. Paul advised, 'Him that is weak in faith, receive ye, but not to doubtful disputation.' Romans 14:1 This means they should avoid unnecessary arguement with believers who shared variant perspective on religious issues.  If you know better, Paul advised that you should treat th...

HOW COULD I?

This was the question Joseph asked himself when Potiphar's wife asked him to lay with her. " How can I do this wickedness and sin against my God?" For Joseph, having an affair with Potiphar's wife wasn't only going to displease Potiphar if found out, but it would affect his relationship with his God.  How often have you called yourself to order? Where are your standards? Where are your deliberately upheld principles? What are your no no's? Your never never! For Joseph, prison was better than compromising. Laying with his master's wife was a NO NO! Daniel decided in his heart that he will not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank. This was the resolution Daniel made in his heart in honour to his God. (He refused to eat because the royal delicacies were dedicated to Babylonian gods.) Have you made this kind of resolution to honour God with your choices, your body, to please Him in the face of opposition or r...
