"Jesus told them another parable, 'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. A man takes it and sows it in the field, and when it grows up, it is the biggest of all plants. It becomes a tree, so that the birds come and make their nests in its branches.' ” Matthew 13:31–32 (GNT)
What is Parable?
Jesus used several illustrations to drive home his teachings. One of such illustrations is the use of parables. A parable is a short story that teaches a moral or spiritual lesson.
Talking about the lifestyle, nature of the kingdom of Heaven and the impacts it creates in the lives of those who have and operate in it, Jesus used the mustard seed to illustrate.
The Seed is a Potential Giant Tree
The mustard seed is the smallest of all seedlings. It is as tiny as grain of rice split in three or two. Yet, it has life in it, and can birth a mighty tree with branches strong enough for many people to climb. Birds build their nest and probably other creatures live there.
The Kingdom of Heaven is a Seed
When one receives Jesus into his/her life, the person, according to scripture, receives the implantation of the seed of eternal life and of the Kingdom of God. (See John 17:3)
As seeds grow in the ground, shoot forth new bud, and begin to flourish into a tender and later a large plant, so does the presence of God grows in the life of a believer.
That is the reason our lives take a higher dimension when we receive Jesus. The Seed grows in us.
The believer’s knowledge about God’s word increases gradually. His/her spiritual capacity enlarges. He/she could now exercise dominion over situations and his/her environment.
The Seed Grows When Nurtured
If you are born again, you have a responsibility to nurture the seed of the kingdom of Heaven in you. Apostle Peter reveals how to nurture it when he said “As new born babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.”
(1 Peter 2: 2 KJV).
Grow Your Seed
The word of God is like manure to your seed. Feed on it. If your life must blossom and enlarge like a grown mustard tree, providing shade, succour and comfort to others, family and society, you have to allow your seed grow. The seed represents the presence, kingdom and life of God.
Also, the Holy Spirit helps you to grow your seed. Allow him, and like a mustard seed, you will grow and blossom.
God bless you.
