Being a great teacher, Jesus used several illustrations to drive home his teachings. One of such is the use of parables.
Drawing from the four synoptic gospels, there are over 30 parables to describe the Kingdom of Heaven.
Some of them are Parable of the Pearls, Parable of the Net, Parable of the Vineyard, Parable of the Weeds and Tares, Parable of the Mustard Seed and Parable of the Leaven.
Parable of the Hidden Treasures
"Again, the kingdom of God is like like a treasure hidden in a field, which when a man finds it, he covers it, and for the joy thereof, goes and sells all he had and buys that field." Matthew 13:28
In the above verse, there are some keywords. They are 'treasure, hidden, finds, sells, buy and joy.'
A parable is a short story that teaches a moral or spiritual lesson.
The Kingdom of Heaven is a Treasure
In the attempts to give clearer understanding of the new era of salvation, Jesus likened the kingdom of Heaven to a treasure, a valuable object covered in a field.
Some expensive, high worth natural resources (for instance) are in the earth. Until they are sought for, and dug out, they may never be utilised.
Now, imagine passing by a little farm in your neighborhood then you stumble on a huge deposit of gold.
Is The Treasure Worth Selling Out My Properties For?
'...for the joy thereof, goes and sells all he had and buys that field.'
Yes! The content of the field (the treasures: gold, precious stones or oil), when extracted and utilised, could yield great tons of gain.
The Treasure is Salvation, the field is Jesus
The treasure is salvation. It is worth giving up your past, your life, your (earthly) possessions. (If only you can see the benefits of salvation and the joy it gives, nothing else would make sense to you, which gets hinders your access.)
Everything in your life could be sweetened and furnished, if you find this treasure and go for it. You cannot buy salvation. Yet you have a responsibility —give up your past.
The kingdom of Heaven is a life(style) and operations of Heaven, installed by Jesus here on earth. It is a lifestyle of dominion and authority. Until one finds it, he/she is vulnerable to harassment by the devil and storms of life.
It is valuable, that's why it's not by the roadside, it is hidden in Christ. So anyone interested steps forward, puts away his/her past life, priorities, and earthly values, and admits the treasure. Then it becomes his/hers.
I encourage you to make advances towards this treasure.
Selah.
God bless you.
