"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16: 33 (KJV)
What is Peace?
Peace is ‘the state of being calm, or quiet’; also ‘the state of living in friendship with somebody without quarreling’.
Peace is also defined as ‘a situation or period of time in which there is no war or violence in a country or an area’. (OALD)
The Peace of God
The above definitions capture the glimpse of the peace we refer to, but not exactly. Peace as a state of being calm or quiet: someone could be calm and quiet, but internally, he/she is going through hell and trouble!
That is why Jesus specified in John 14:27 ‘My peace I give to you, not the peace of this world!' This means, any other version or kind of peace is temporary or not absolute. Perfect peace is only of God.
Perfect Peace in Jesus
Jesus is referred as the Prince of peace. This is metaphoric. Jesus is the embodiment of peace. In short, Jesus is peace personified.
The peace of God through Jesus Christ is a solemn, calm, internal, concrete conviction that God is in control. The effects of this assurance is what the peace of God is.
It is a state of being where nothing strips you off your confidence in the saving ability of God. This means, in the midst of the storm, you are at peace, absolute peace! Shalom.
Peace is a Product of Faith in God's Word
This is why Jesus began in our main text (above) by saying ‘These things have I spoken to you, that in me, ye might have peace…’
You may know Jesus (or have given your life to him), but you know less about what He said. Do not forget, it is by knowing and believing what He has said, that builds your confidence, which consequently makes you be at peace.
Imagine that your eldest sibling who you stay with travelled, but before he/she travelled, he dropped a note, which you have not read.
So, every night, the security dog barks madly for about two hours without break. This happens for days, and it pisses you off. You get tired and leave the house in spite of the luxury.
That would be your fault, because, in the note you refused to read, he/she has written what you should do to calm the dog down.
But you rather get upset quit your comfort. Similarly, Jesus has written down (through his apostles and prophets) instructions on how to handle life situations, but if you do not read or learn about them, you become distressed and worn out.
Jesus had overcome every challenge you face today. Find out what he said about that situation that threatens your peace. Study the word.
Discover God's peace.
Shalom!
