The reward of persistence
a. "And he spoke a parable unto them (to emphasize), that men ought always to pray and not faint, saying: 'There was in a city, a judge which feared not God, nor regarded man. And there was a widow in that city.
And she came unto him and said 'Avenge me of my aversary'. And he (the judge) would not far a while, but afterwards he said to himself, 'Although I fear not God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming, she weary me.' "
b. "And the Lord Jesus said, 'Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge his own elect which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily."
c. "Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:1-8)
A parable is a short story told to teach moral or spiritual lessons. Jesus used many parables to teach the people. He used this one to emphasize the relevance of persistent prayers. This is captured in the opening verse, 'And he spoke a parable unto them (to emphasize), that men ought always to pray and not faint..' Luke 18:1
Men Ought Always to Pray
The judge represents God (but God is just); the woman represents humans (God's children). The city represents the world. The woman comes regularly to ask the favour of the judge. The judge regularly refuses. Yet the woman kept showing up. She did not faint, she did not get tired, she did not give up!
Do Not Get Tired of Praying
The little-by-little efforts the woman put in to gain the judge's attention did not go unnoticed. Similarly, you may have prayed, and still pray for a particular thing, for long time without getting your expectation. I tell you today, your prayer is heard. Keep praying (ensure you do it according to the Word of God).
The results of our prayers may not materialise immediately, for a number of reasons. However, we are encouraged in the scriptures to keep hope alive, and not get tired of praying.
In the parable, the judge does not fear God nor regard man. This implies that it doesn't bother him what penalty may befall him for refusing to attend to the woman. Thus, what makes him move is not her situation, but because of her persistence.
Our God is a Merciful, Listening Judge
After sharing the story, (in part B) Jesus pointed to what the judge said, 'I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming, she weary me'. Then Jesus added, 'Shall God not avenge His own elect who cry day and night to Him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that He will avenge him speedily.' (part B)
God's refusal to grant your request at the time expected may sometimes be a test on your faith. So, do not give up on God. While He tarries, do not retire. Sorrows may endure through the night, but joy shall beam with the sun rise in the morning.
It may be hard to push on after series of disappointments, troubles, pains, shame and regrets. But Romans 8:18 says that the suffering of this present time is not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us.
You have an urgent need? God can do it. Believe He can, and do not lose hope. Like the woman in our story today, keep asking and keep believing. God still answer prayers. He will answer you sooner or later.
God bless you. May your prayers be answered this weekend, in Jesus name. Amen.
