GROWING IN FAITH (2)
[Developing our covenant walk with God]
“…we have many things to say, [but] hard to utter, seeing that ye are dull of hearing. The time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that someone should teach you again the basics of the gospel, and have become as one who has need of milk, and not of strong meat."
13 "For everyone that uses milk is unskillful in word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But Strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5: 11b – 14)
Flashback
In the introductory article on this topic, we gave an illustration of a nursery school pupils not been able to understand engineering mathematics, because it is far too high for them. Similarly, many of us believers are making requests to God that are ‘far too high’ than our spiritual abilities to handle. Thus, the need to grow in faith.
"Everything in the Kingdom answer to our degree of spiritual understanding."
Bishop David Oyedepo
The Root Versus the Tree
Yes, many of us have little or shallow spiritual root, and we want our branches to reach to the skies. It doesn't work that way. In the text above, the speaker has a message for the people but he could not deliver to the people because they are dull of hearing.
Picture a big tree in your mind, it has a large network of roots fastened to the ground round it. Line up 50 people to climb the various branches of that tree, as many as could climb, no problem. The tree stands. The tree is rooted. God desires us to grow like that. By this growth, our senses would be exercised to discern both good and evil. (Read my article Parable of the Mustard Seed)
Wisdom to Distinguish
Life is full of choices. Some are confusing and so complex. Good options may be coated with mud and dirt, while dangerous options may parade in flashy colours. It takes the wisdom of God to discern the good, un-regrettable options. The distinguishing parameters are hidden in the Word of God. (the manual for living). Study and discover them.
The Milk and Meat of the Word
Peter said:
"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word,
that ye may grow thereby." (1 peter 2: 2)
At new birth, you were a 'babe' in Christ. You should not continue as a babe, feeding on milk. Take on a higher nutritional level, go for the meat of the Word, like we have in our text above: ‘for strong meat belongs to them that are of full age…’
This has nothing to do with your age, like 25 or 32, no. This is spiritual Maturity; understanding God the more, understanding the Word, and spiritual things the more.
This has a ripple effect on everything you do, everything. May the Holy Spirit help us to grow in the faith in Jesus name, amen.
God bless you.
