PARABLE OF THE TALENTS
The Story
a. "For the Kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who came to his own servants, and delivered his goods. And to the first, he gave five talents, to another, two; and to another, one; to every man according to their several abilities, and straightway took his journey.
b. "Then he that received five talents, went and traded with the same and made other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his Lord's money.
c. "After a long time, the Lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. And So, he that received five talents came with other five talents saying, 'Lord thou delivered unto me five talents. Behold, I have gained beside them five more talents'. And his Lord said unto him, 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the rest of thy Lord.'
d. "He also that had received two talents came and said, 'Lord thou delivered unto me two talents. Behold, I have gained two other talents besides them. His Lord said until him, 'Well done...'
e. "Then he that received one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew that you are a hard man; reaping where thou had not sown, and gathered where thou has not strawed. I was afraid, so I hid thy talent in the earth...' His Lord answered and said unto him, 'Thou wicked and slothful servant, ...thou ought to have given out my money to the exchanger and then at my coming, I should receive mine own interest'.
f. (Then the master commanded,) 'Take therefore the talent from him and give it unto him that had ten talents... and cast ye the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' (Mathew 25: 14–30)
Duty and Ability
The story above shows that duties come with abilities. The Expositor's Bible Commentary reveals that the talents represent abilities and opportunities. The master gave each servant talents based on his judgement of their capacity. So, first received five, the other –two and the last received one. Based on your abilities, you have your allotted duties. Discover your abilities (talents).
Your Assignment on Earth
The *Commentary also makes it clear that utilising your talents is doing with your abilities and skills what is needful –in your family, the church, civil duties, your work place, etc. The first servant received five talents. He invested it. The talents multiplied. The Bible tells us that we are the plantings of the Lord. (Matthew 10:38)
Our lives are supposed to multiply goodness and the fruits of righteousness and of the Holy Spirit, resulting in attracting souls to Christ, and blessing to society. Use your talents wisely.
The Reward
The master came back after a long time. He called his servants and demanded accountability. The first and second servants did. The third blamed the master for reaping where he did not sow. He gave excuses. (Part of 'f' above shows what happened to him.)
There is reward for using your gifts wisely (to serve God and to bless others). Do not be discouraged when doing good. If the reward does not show up immediately. (Galatians 6:9) Be patient. Be faithful in little things. They are your qualifications for greater ones.
Utilise Your Gifts
The last steward may have been offended for been given one talent. But if he had utilised that one, he would have been rewarded. Even though he tried and failed, the master would have honoured his labour. But he neglected it. He buried it!
Do not bury the abilities and gifts of God in your life. Use it, even when no one is appreciating it. God sees. And God rewards. Let your light so shine among men, that they might see your good works and glorify God. Remain blessed.
