NOT JUST A GOD, BUT A FATHER (2)
(A better perspective about God)
Scriptures
"Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, says the Lord. And touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you. And I will be a father unto you and ye shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
(2 Corinthians 6:17-18 KJV)
Flashback
In the first edition of this article, we spelt out the importance of God's fatherly role to us. Taking our text from Matthew 7:11, we realised that God's care surpasses that of our earthly parents.
I also encouraged that we should approach God as a Father, and not just as a 'big' God. These positions remain intact.
In this second edition, I choose to add another criterion to making God your Father. Yes! The Fatherhood of God comes at a cost —Jesus paid it all. Yet, we have a role to play in order to enter into the covenant.
Be Ye Separate
Our God is not an idol. He has standards. Take for instance, the child who refuses to comply with the moral standards which his father sets for him will remain in contempt till he complies, (or the Father compromise).
But rest assured, God cannot compromise. He may hands off for a while to allow you grow.
God desires for us to be different from the world, because he calls us His children. It is shameful when a disobedient son always brings shame on his renown, respectable father. People tend to wonder, 'Why is the son not like his father?'.
Touch Not The Unclean Thing
God spoke expressly as recorded in our text above 'I will receive you. And I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters'.
However, this comes at the cost of giving up every lifestyle of filth and ungodliness. Yes, you will have to let it go!
Our God cannot behold iniquity. (Hab 1:13) And how long shall He pardon you for one particular behaviour? When you hold onto something God does not like, you are actually suspending God from your life.
(Note: it does not mean that He will forsake you. No. He is always with you, but sin destroys your relationship with God overtime.
It makes you (feel) guilty each time you want to pray sometimes. And you will always hear Him say, 'Let it go'.
Give Me You!
Shuna Wilson, in her song said 'Give me you, everything else can wait'. What are you placing before God in your life?
What has taken the place of your Heavenly Father? Who else has assumed the role of your Almighty.
It think it is time to say 'Lord, give me you'. It is a sweet experience to have Jesus and embrace the love of his Father who is your Father too.
The Psalmist said, 'The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want'. I recommend that you make God your Shepherd too.
He is God over all. But not all have said to Him, 'Be my Shepherd'. He does not impose Himself on anyone. He comes on invitation.
And when you let go of the past (your sin and bad habit) then He becomes not just your God, but your Father. It's a lovely experience to have God. Think of it.
