[Identifying the multiple functions of the Holy Spirit]
Welcome to the second edition of "The Holy Spirit" teaching series. In the first edition, we introduced the Holy Spirit as a personality, a gift from the Father, and as a member of the God-head.
In this edition, we shall consider the numerous roles the Holy Spirit plays in us as Believers. The Holy Spirit plays many other roles in the universe, but we shall focus on what he does on us as Believers.
1. He is our Comforter and Companion
Jesus openly declared that in the world, we shall have troubles. However, he did not leave us without consolation. He said we should cheer up, for He has conquered the world. (See John 16:33)
In addition, He promised to comfort us through the Holy Spirit. In John 16:7, Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as our Comforter. He said this to His disciples when they felt sad about the news of his death.
So friend, are you terrified? Are you in trouble? Is there anything that contends with your joy? Beckon on the Comforter.
He is my Comforter. He consoles me more than anyone could. He speaks to your heart directly, not just your ears. His words drop gently like a pebble cast into the river of your soul.
2. He is our Teacher and Counselor
This is the ministry of the Holy Spirit I enjoy the most. The Holy Spirit is all-knowing. The Bible says He searches even the deep things of God. (1Corinthians 2:10) He teaches me. I have enjoyed His teaching ministry.
There are some things you would never understand except He teaches you. There are some things you would never know until He shows you. He knows you more than you know yourself, or anyone else. Partner with Him and He will show you.
3. He Reveals and Directs Us
We are admonished to walk by faith and not by sight. Faith too is powered by the Holy Spirit. He shows us secrets that are not obvious. The Scriptures are filled with many examples of this.
For example, Peter detected the spirit of divination in the damsel who declared positive things. He detected this foul spirit by the Spirit of God. (See Acts 16:16-18)
The Holy Spirit revealed to Peter the gimmicks of Annanias and Sapphira. (See Acts 5:1-10)
The Holy Spirit directed the Apostles against going to Asia in Acts 16:6. The Holy Spirit revealed to Peter, God's plan to extend salvation to the Gentiles. (See Acts 10:10-20)
He also directed Peter to go with the messengers of Cornelius to pray for them to be saved. The Holy Spirit also revealed Jesus to John the Baptist. (John 1:33) Perhaps, He has something to reveal to you.
He Leads Me
Personally, the Holy Spirit has revealed me to me. In December 2017, he directed me from the poetry review project which I planned to do. Afterwards, I discovered that He did that so I could concentrate on Goodlife Writes.
I gave up on the poetry project. Now I find joy and fulfilment expounding scriptures. This is the 84th article on Goodlife Writes. I credit this grace to the help Holy Spirit.
We shall find out other ministerial functions of the Holy Spirit in our next edition. God bless you.
